CALEXICO — While most of us will be in the middle of a sound sleep at 3 a.m. Dec. 7, a 22-year-old Imperial Valley tradition will be in full swing.

The 22nd annual Farm Worker Appreciation Breakfast is going to be held that morning at the Calexico One Stop Employment Service Center.

The breakfast will run from 3 to 6 a.m.

What started in 1979 with a handful of employees from the Imperial Valley Employment Development Department serving coffee and doughnuts — purchased with their own money — has turned into an annual event attracting close to 3,500 farm workers.

In 1985 the Calexico Chamber of Commerce joined the effort and coffee and doughnuts transformed into a full breakfast to honor the field workers who are an integral part of the success of the Imperial Valley as a major agricultural producer.

Throughout the week beginning Dec. 2 and leading up to the breakfast, local community- based organizations and merchants will be providing informational materials, brochures and services.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the breakfast should make a check payable to the 22nd annual Farm Worker Breakfast c/o Calexico Chamber of Commerce and mail it to P.O. Box 948, Calexico, CA 92231.

For further information and to participate in this event, contact event coordinator Loli Torres at 768-7101.
