>>50 years ago — Getting ready for Santa, El Centro firemen are breaking out Christmas decorations in preparation for Santa's annual visit by stagecoach. Firemen will be putting the "Christmas spirit" into things around El Centro on Monday when they start stringing hundreds of feet of tinsel.

>>40 years ago — The Wildcats clawed the Spartans 27-12 Friday night. Displaying a smooth running game, with fine ball control and alert defense, the Wildcats of Brawley High gained another league championship with their win over Central.

>>30 years ago — A Brawley laborer was beaten by three youths on Main Street in Brawley on Wednesday night after he tried to flee their robbery attempt. Ynes E. Garcia, 56, told police the three young men, 18 or 19 years old, hit him with fists and feet before they ran off. The robbery attempt was futile anyway, Garcia told police, because he didn't have any money.

>>20 years ago — Jeff Deyo starts his second year as coach of the Imperial Valley College basketball team tonight, playing the Mexico state all-stars at 7:30 in the IVC gym. Mexico is expected to have an edge in age and experience. The Baja quintet recently competed in regional and state playoffs below the border.
