Man injured in crash of ultra-light airplane near Salton City airport

SALTON CITY — An ultra-light airplane crashed near the airport here this morning, leaving a 39-year-old man injured.

Imperial County Sheriff's Sgt. Pompeyo Tabarez said a man whose identity was not available this morning crashed his ultra-light airplane near the airport here about 7:51 a.m.

Tabarez said a passing motorist witnessed the plane go down and called the Sheriff's Office.

Tabarez said when deputies arrived they found the airplane upside down.

Investigators are not sure if the plane was attempting to land or take off when the crash occurred.

The pilot was the only person in the plane.

Further information on the accident was not available this morning.

A spokesman at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley said around 9 a.m. the man was being treated in the emergency room.
