Voice: More attention needed to E.C. pedestrian crossings

November 21, 2001

I have complained about this problem before, but I guess no one cares or is listening.

A few days ago a friend was hit by a lady who ran the stop sign. It was right at the time when people were getting off work. The only good thing about it was no one was hurt.

What is really strange is that Imperial County and El Centro can spend money on our downtown to beautify it and put a signal light at Aten Road and Cross Road, which happens to be the new home for the Border Patrol. We now know who has priority.

We have all sizes of children with their parents who walk to Sunflower School and home every day. They have to cross Adams Avenue and La Brucherie somewhere. It is really strange a construction site in the county is more important than the safety of our kids walking to school and the people who have to drive this way.

What does it take to get someone to listen? All someone has to do is set on the vacant lot at the intersection every day at 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. and see for themselves.

Is that too much to ask? Or do we have to wait for someone important, like a City Council member or one of their family members, to get hurt or maybe killed?

What are these people thinking? Is it money?
