Funeral services were Nov. 15 in Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Novato for Gregorio "Greg" Castillo, 71, of Novato, a former Holtville resident who died Nov. 11 in his home.

Mr. Castillo was born March 12, 1930, along an irrigation canal in Yuma. He grew up on his family farm on East Zenos Road near Holtville.

Mr. Castillo was a graduate of Holtville High School and San Diego State University, where he majored in pre-law.

After his graduation from SDSU, he joined the U.S. Air Force, beginning his aviation career. He became a jet fighter pilot and served for 11 years, ending his military service as a captain-pilot with the 29th Fighter Squadron in Great Falls, Mont.


Upon leaving the Air Force, Mr. Castillo continued to pursue his passion for flying and joined United Airlines in San Francisco, where Mr. Castillo attained the rank of captain, piloting a variety of aircraft until his retirement from United after 33 years of service in 1996.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Maria Luisa Castillo and Rosie Downs; and brother, Domingo "Doc" Castillo.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Castillo; children, Joseph, Cathy, Gregory Scott and Stephanie Castillo; brothers, Max, Braulio and Frank Castillo; sisters, Mary Acosta, Mona Claffey, Patty Downs, Rey Fregozo and Clem Couch; and five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley for Amanda Fayth Ramirez, 42, of El Centro, who died Friday in her home. Bob Harding of the Church of Christ of El Centro will officiate.

A determination of the cause of death is pending investigation.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro.

Mrs. Ramirez was born Jan. 13, 1959, in Phoenix, and was raised in Burbank.

She married Joe Ramirez in Riverside on Dec. 21, 1981. The Ramirezes came to the Imperial Valley in 1985, settling in El Centro.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Ramirez of El Centro; parents, James and Betty Jane Hunt of Alpine; and brother, Kevin Hunt of Monrovia.
