Police search for leads in shooting

November 21, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — Police here are following anonymous tips as they continue to investigate a shooting Monday night in which the victims remain reluctant to cooperate.

About 8:45 p.m. Monday three Brawley men, Alfredo Holguin, 18, Nicholas Rodriguez, 31, and Fabian Cardiel, 20, were walking in an alley near the 900 block of Main Street when they were approached from behind by a vehicle. Someone inside the vehicle opened fire. A bullet grazed Rodriguez's left arm while Holguin was shot twice in the abdominal area. Cardiel was not hit.

Brawley police Lt. John Myers said this morning that investigators have received some anonymous calls related to the shooting but haven't received information directly from the victims.

Myers told a reporter Tuesday the three men were not being cooperative with police.

Holguin is in stable condition in the intensive-care unit at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, Myers said today.

Investigators aren't sure how many people were in the vehicle from which the shots were fired. Police found .25-caliber bullet casings in the area.
