IMPERIAL — A near collision between two vehicles on Highway 86 north of this city quickly grew into a five-vehicle accident Tuesday, leaving four people with minor to moderate injuries.

The accident occurred at 9:40 a.m. on Highway 86 near Larsen Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a pickup driven by Jaime Castro, 29, of Seeley was heading north on the highway when Castro attempted to change lanes.

Castro merged toward a sport-utility vehicle driven by Vicki Viloria, 41, of Imperial.

Viloria drove into the center divider to avoid the sideswipe, causing several small rocks to fly up and shatter the windshield of a van driven by Maria Navarro, 31, of Holtville.

Viloria re-entered the northbound lanes out of control and her vehicle spun.

Castro, meanwhile, overcorrected as he attempted to return to his lane, lost control of his vehicle and drove into the center divider, causing his vehicle to overturn.

His vehicle entered the southbound lanes into the path of a car driven by Jo Ann Hurtado, 38, of Calipatria. Hurtado steered to the right to avoid the collision and lost control of her car. She ended up in a deep drainage ditch south of Larsen.

Castro's vehicle was still overturning when he struck a car driven by a 45-year-old man from Imperial. The name of that man was unavailable.

Castro, Hurtado and a 15-year-old girl in Hurtado's car suffered moderate injuries and were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center.

The Imperial man suffered minor injuries. He was going to seek his own aid.

All those involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.

The accident remained under investigation today.
