IMPERIAL — City Councilman Doug Cox was named mayor for 2001-02 at Wednesday night's City Council meeting here.

Cox, who served as mayor in 1989, is a native of Imperial and is water master for the Imperial Irrigation District.

Of his priorities as mayor, Cox said: "I want to clean up the city. With a nuisance abatement ordinance in place, we can do that."

Cox said there has been a problem with discarded appliances in alleyways and recreational vehicles parked on city streets beyond the allowed time limit.

The Redevelopment Agency is another area that will have Cox's attention.

"I'm pleased with the way we're moving along with the preliminary steps for this. This is going to give us a way to vastly improve the downtown area."

A major concern for Cox is what he sees as "the problems between the city and the (Imperial County) Airport land-use committee."

"There is so much prime commercial property we can't develop because it is in the airport land-use zone," Cox said.

Councilman Geoff Dale was named mayor pro tem.

Dale was named by the council in July to fill the seat vacated by Tom Mazeroll, who resigned when he moved outside Imperial city limits.
