Crews fight fires at Resource

November 22, 2001

Recovery plant

BRAWLEY — County fire crews responded to a pair of fires Thursday at Imperial Valley Resource Recovery LLC near the intersection of Highway 111 and Keystone Road.

As of presstime Thursday night, a smaller fire at the recovery plant had been extinguished and firefighters were working to get a second larger blaze under control.

According to a worker at the recovery plant who declined to give his name, the blazes started in a pile of old wood and were the result of "spontaneous combustion."

The worker told a reporter the old piles of wood had been doused with fuel at some point but he didn't elaborate.

County fire officials could not be reached for comment on how the blazes may have started or if the fires were endangering any structures.

A report of the fires came in to Brawley's county fire substation at 4:26 p.m. As of presstime, two fire trucks and one water-pumping truck were at the scene. It wasn't known how many firefighters responded.

Imperial Valley Resource Recovery is at 3505 Highway 111.
