Two people were killed in off-road accidents and another man was arrested for trying to run over a U.S. Bureau of Land Management ranger during the first few days of the Thanksgiving holiday in the Imperial San Dunes Recreation Area.

Ira Long, off-highway vehicle grant coordinator for the BLM, said a man in his late 30s died after he rolled his dune buggy Friday night.

The other fatality involved another man Saturday evening.

Details were not available on either of the deaths Saturday night.

Several driving under the influence arrests also were made in the dunes in recent days, according to logs at the county Sheriff's Office.

On Thursday a man was arrested for attempted murder after he hit a ranger with his vehicle while trying to flee.

Details were sketchy but Long said the man was being chased by a ranger for speeding Thursday morning when the incident occurred.

The ranger attempted to approach the suspect's vehicle after he pulled over but the driver rammed the ranger and drove off, according to reports.

The suspect was caught and arrested near Gecko Road by other rangers.

According to sheriff's logs the suspect's name is Kjell Stolt, 42, of San Diego.

Long said the ranger received minor injuries.

Stolt was being held at county jail Saturday with bail set at $100,000.

Long said rangers had 211 medical response calls in the dunes over the weekend as of Saturday.
