BRAWLEY — A 78-year-old man was killed Monday after the truck in which he was riding was struck by another truck at an intersection near here.

The identity of the man, a Brawley resident, could not be released this morning because relatives had not been notified of his death.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Hovley and Fredricks roads at 3:40 p.m. A pickup driven by Ernest Charles Shephard, 42, of Imperial was headed south on Hovely, said California Highway Patrol Officer Hector Tabarez.

The driver of the second pickup, Manuel Mojarro Ortega, 64, of Imperial, had stopped at the intersection in the westbound lane of Fredricks. Mojarro Ortega pulled into the intersection and his truck was broadsided by Shephard's vehicle, Tabarez said.

The man who died, the only passenger in Mojarro Ortega's truck, received the brunt of the collision and was killed, Tabarez said.

Mojarro Ortega sustained moderate injuries, complaining of pain to his pelvis, back and left shoulder and was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley.

Shephard and his passenger, his wife, Gaybe Shephard, 40, of Imperial, sustained minor injuries but were not transported for treatment, Tabarez said.
