>>50 years ago — Superior Court Judge Luray Mouser sentenced killer Billy Cook to death for the shooting murder of Seattle salesman Robert Dewey. Cook was the fifth man sentenced to die from Imperial County.

>>40 years ago — The Holtville High Vikings slugged out a 15-7 victory over Rim of the World High School in a rain-soaked Orange Show Stadium on Saturday night. It was a first-round win for Holtville. The Vikings are scheduled to face Needles next.

>>30 years ago — A combined operation of Mexico and United States-based rescue units was dispatched to the rugged Diablo Canyon area of Baja California in an attempt to reach two California men reportedly injured while mountain climbing.

>>20 years ago — A town as big as Brawley, Westmorland and Calipatria put together is building in the local sand dunes, a U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokesman said today. A BLM ranger estimated that 20,000 people are "playing" in the sand and 5,000 more Thanksgiving vacationers are expected to arrive before the weekend is over.
