Basketball: Eagles fall to Grossmont

LA MESA — The Southwest High girls basketball team kicked off its season on the wrong foot as it lost 68-52 to Grossmont in the opening round of the Grossmont tournament here Tuesday.

Leading Southwest were Denise Rios with 16 points, Erica Antunez with 12 points and Tasha Ernest with 10 rebounds.

The Eagles will be back in tournament action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday as they take on Helix.

Imperial 55,

Yuma Catholic 21

IMPERIAL — Led by Jenny Bowlan's 16 points and nine rebounds, the Imperial High girls basketball team began its season with a 55-21 win here Tuesday.

Also contributing for Imperial were Alexa Ostowski with 16 points, Reah Deal with 15 points and Stephanie Ortega with seven assists.


Imperial will play at Mountain Empire at 6 p.m. Friday.

Boys basketball

Holtville 50,

Yuma Catholic 44

YUMA — The Holtville High boys basketball team edged Yuma Catholic 50-44 to kick off its season here Tuesday.

Andres Quesada led Holtville with 16 points. Teammate John Singh had 15 and Jacob Freeman added 10 points for the Vikings.
