Skeletal remains discovered in the west desert area

November 30, 2001

PAINTED GORGE — The skeletal remains of a man, likely an undocumented immigrant, were found in this west desert area Thursday.

The remains were discovered by hikers about 1 p.m. in the Painted Gorge area just south of Carrizo Wash, a high traffic area for illegal immigration.

County Coroner Investigator Deputy Rick Williams said no identification was found with the remains. However, it is thought the remains are those of an undocumented immigrant because of the area in which they were discovered.

"It is consistent with an area (undocumented immigrants) use," Williams said.
