Our Opinion: take the time

December 01, 2001

The holiday season is upon us. Traffic gets a little heavier, lines at stores get longer and tempers can flare as the season nears.

It doesn't have to be that way.

With everything happening in the world and in our own back yard, we should be reflective and think about what makes the holidays such a special time.

Take some time from your hectic schedules — and even from all the holiday shopping — and notice what the Valley has to help people enjoy the holidays.

There are a number of holiday programs and presentations put on by local theater groups and schools that are worth taking the time to go see. In today's world, when it can be difficult to find the time to spend together, gathering the family and some friends to see a local holiday presentation is worth the effort.

Take a drive around your neighborhood, and along other city streets, and view the effort many put into decorating their homes — creating a festive cheer all can enjoy.

There are entire blocks — like Sandalwood Drive in El Centro — where families join together to put out luminarias as Christmas draws close. Along Sunset Drive in Brawley families traditionally create a street full of decorations that draws onlookers from all over the Valley. Those who live on Palm Drive in Calexico also work together to create a street framed by houses covered with lights and holiday decorations.

The holidays are an important time, a time to enjoy. They shouldn't be about dealing with crowds, dwindling patience and hot tempers as you struggle to find that perfect gift. These days are a time for seeing families and friends and for reflecting on how lucky we are to have such people in our lives.

Take the time to celebrate with them; take the time to enjoy the different ways people can celebrate together.

This has been a hard year, full of loss. There still is a sense of uneasiness as the world events constantly change.

But there is much we have to reflect on this year, and there still are many reasons to feel joy this season.

We wish the people of the Imperial Valley, of the nation and the world a happy and safe holiday season.
