Coroner: Name released on woman killed by big rig

December 03, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

The county Coroner's Office has released the name of the woman killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer rig Saturday.

Maria Rivas, 36, who resides in both Salinas and Yuma, was driving a car south on Forrester Road about 200 feet behind another vehicle filled with people with whom she was traveling.

Shortly after sunrise, Rivas failed to negotiate a slight bend in the road, allowing her vehicle to drift into the northbound lanes and oncoming traffic.

Her vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer rig driven by Jose Arevalo, 42, of Brawley. She died at the scene from sudden blunt force trauma to her neck, said county Coroner Investigator Deputy Rick Williams.

Arevalo was not injured.

Imperial County firefighters and county Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the site to assist California Highway Patrol officers.
