>>50 years ago — Competing against more than 30 contestants in an all-day horse show yesterday at El Centro's Stark Field, Sharon Young, 14, and John Earls, 17, were named all-around champion cowgirl and cowboy at the fourth annual Brigadettes' rodeo.

>>40 years ago — Dateland Ice Cream Bar at Main and Ninth streets in El Centro will have its grand opening Sunday from noon until 9 p.m. Fruit punch will be served. Plans call for manufacturing ice cream in El Centro, making it the first in the Valley with such industry.

>>30 years ago — Marie Savinon, 18, of Winterhaven needed a husband so she advertised in a Phoenix newspaper. Today she is Mrs. Imond "Bob" Katton and she hopes to become legal guardians of her four sisters. Miss Savinon and Katton, 22, a Lebanese premedical student, traveled here for a 15-minute wedding ceremony. The couple immediately returned to Phoenix.

>>20 years ago — A Calipatria school bus loaded with 30 passengers, sustained damage Tuesday night from rocks and bottles thrown at the vehicle on the open highway as it headed home after a basketball game in Holtville. Calipatria won the game.
