December 03, 2001

YUCCA VALLEY — The Central High School boys soccer team finished in fifth place after losing two matches at the Yucca Valley Tournament over the weekend.

Central, 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the Yucca tournament, beat La Quinta on penalty kicks Saturday after the game ended in a 2-2 tie in regulation. Luis Jimenez scored the first goal and Jesse Peña scored the second, both on penalty kicks.

Earlier Saturday, Central lost 3-2 to Avalon High of Catalina Island. Jimenez and Martin Lemus scored Central's goals, both from about 10 yards outside the goalkeeper box.

Central lost to Yucca Valley High School 2-1 Friday evening. Gustavo Palomino scored the only goal for Central after a mistake by the Yucca goalkeeper. Central's loss against Yucca diminished the Spartans' possibility of winning the tournament.
