Calexico FFA teams place in contests

FALLBROOK — Four teams made up of 14 Calexico FFA members recently competed in the vegetables, ornamental horticulture, farm records and best informed greenhand contests at Fallbrook High School.

FFA advisers Luz A. Moreno from De Anza Junior High School and Sue Cuenin and Johnny Esquer from Calexico High School accompanied the group to the Nov. 17 competition.

All teams placed in the top five. The vegetables judging team of Sal Hurtado, Esmeralda Aguilera and Karla Wong took third. Sal placed fifth, Karla placed eighth and Esmeralda placed ninth as individuals.

The ornamental horticulture team of Sergio Almada, Ivan Vargas and Cristina Cuevas placed fourth.

The farm records team of Eduardo Mercado, Crystal Cortez and Carl Santiago placed fourth.

The BIG team of Anita Claverie, Victor Ramirez, Jesus Espinoza, Irma Heras, Rogelio Gonzalez and Nayelly Salgado placed second. Anita placed sixth and Victor placed ninth as individuals.

The FFA teams are coached before and after school. Agriculture courses introduce and offer the opportunity to all agriculture students to get involved in FFA teams.
