El Centro police arrested a 51-year-old woman for allegedly assaulting another woman with a wooden cane Monday.

Ernestina Burrola was booked into the county jail with her bail set at $20,000. She remained in custody this morning.

She was arrested about 3 p.m. following the alleged assault at the Kon Tiki hotel on Adams Avenue.

Police officials alleged Burrola went to the victim, Lisa Montanez, an adult whose age was unavailable, seeking money Montanez reportedly owed to someone.

Montanez was not seriously injured, although she was struck several times.

Two males on bikes snatched a purse from a woman walking on a quiet El Centro street Monday night.

The theft occurred in the 500 block of Park Avenue at 10:18 p.m.

While the woman, age 34 and an El Centro resident, was not injured, the suspects got away with $600 in cash and $160 in food stamps she had in her purse.

There was no information available on the suspects. Police said the theft was reported to the Police Department about 40 minutes after it occurred.
