CALIPATRIA — A 24-year-old man was arrested by police here on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance after he was found carrying a syringe filled with 25 cc of heroine.

Calipatria Police Chief Reggie Gomez said a vehicle driven by Calipatria resident Hugo A. Gaytan was pulled over by police near the intersection of Sorenson Avenue and Alexandria Street around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after an officer noticed Gaytan's vehicle was swerving.

Gaytan gave the officer permission to search the vehicle, Gomez said, at which time three syringes were found.

One contained a white substance police later identified as heroine, Gomez added.

The heroine was sent to the state Department of Justice for an official analysis, Gomez said.

Gaytan was in the county jail this morning with bail set at $5,000.
