Basketball: Criminals cage Eagles

December 06, 2001|By CHRIS GRANT, Sports Editor

The Southwest High School basketball team continued its early-season struggles, falling 77-39 to Yuma in El Centro on Wednesday.

The Eagles, who drop to 1-4, were led by Nate LaBoy's 14 points and five steals. Jesse Hoyt had 10 for Southwest, which suffered its second season setback in as many days.

From the moment the game started it was apparent Southwest would struggle.

Led by Harry Ramirez, the Criminals jumped from the gates with 12 points before the Eagles could even get on the board. Hoyt then scored four points, cutting Yuma's lead to 12-4, before the Crims pushed their advantage to 18-4.

LaBoy hit a pair of threes to bring Southwest to 20-10, but it was as close as the Eagles would get. Ramirez, who scored 18 points in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 30, hit for five points to close the first quarter, with Yuma leading 27-12.

With most of their starters on the bench, the Crims pushed their lead to 45-25 at the half.

The Eagles played what seemed to be their best quarter in the third as they managed to keep pace with Yuma for the first four minutes before the Crims turned it on with a 9-6 run to close the quarter up 60-36.

Any progress Southwest might have made in the third quarter did not show in the fourth as Yuma's bench outscored the Eagles 17-3. In fact, Southwest did not score in the final quarter until three minutes were left in the game and LaBoy hit a lay-up.

Brian Martinez finished with eight points and five rebounds for the Eagles.

Southwest coach Marty Zwart declined comment after the game.

The Eagles will be back in action Friday at the West Hills tournament in Santee.
