Voice: Relative of man shot laments "unfathomable horror"

December 06, 2001

Arvel Reeves is my father-in-law. He is the 65-year-old who was shot while at Glamis over Thanksgiving. After 10 years of enjoying our family together in the dunes, I think we will call it quits.

Arvel (or "Fossil," as we call him) was the healthiest grandfather I know. He was shot three times in front of my three young children, all because he and my husband attempted to protect a child's motorcycle. We have been advised that the men involved in this shooting were released because, as they beat my husband, my father-in-law shot his gun into the air in an attempt to stop them. Too many old westerns.

Now he lies in a hospital bed in San Diego. Because he was pushed to the ground before being shot, the three bullets created extreme havoc, puncturing his lungs, liver, spleen and numerous parts of his colon. He must have tried to protect himself because one hand has two shots through it and the other has one.

Arvel is a veteran. Is this how it will end for him? We cry and pray and try to make sense of this unfathomable horror.
