Overpass plans at Highway 86 and C Street are unveiled for Westmorland City Council

December 06, 2001|By MARIO RENTERIA, Staff Writer

WESTMORLAND — The City Council here saw preliminary plans for an overpass over Highway 86 at C Street.

About a year ago the city was awarded a $500,000 Safe Routes for School grant from the California Department of Transportation.

The overpass to be constructed with the grant will help schoolchildren safely cross the highway on their way to and from school.

Jack Holt of The Holt Group showed council the preliminary plan. The Holt Group offers engineering and planning services to the city.

Holt said he will try to get an exemption from Caltrans for building handicapped ramps.

He said the handicapped ramps would make the overpass longer. Removing the handicapped ramps would shorten the overpass.

In other city business:

· the council, sitting as the city Redevelopment Agency board, tabled a resolution that would authorize the purchase of property for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center for women.

The property belongs to resident Steve Dickerson and is between H and G streets just south of Highway 86.

Once the city acquires the property, it will be sold to Alternative Program Inc. of Bakersfield for $1. Alternative Program would build and run the facility.

· the council passed a resolution that opposes fallowing farmland in the Imperial Valley to help rehabilitate the Salton Sea.
