Youth sports: Four junior wrestlers take first

CHULA VISTA — Three Imperial junior wrestlers and one grappler from Holtville earned first-place finishes at a tournament at Hilltop High School here over the weekend.

In the novice class, Imperial's Steven Elizalde was first at 70 pounds and Imperial's Reece Leon (90) and Johnny Vasquez (100) won their weight classes. Holtville's Shelby Drye (75) also took first place.

In the rookie division, Imperial's Essai Carpio (40) was second and Victor Gonzalez (35) third while Holtville's Robert Verhofstadt (45) took second and R.J. Marsh (50) fifth.

In the bantam class, Holtville's Nathaniel Rabb (50) was fourth and Steven Drye (55) fifth. Imperial's Vincent Elizalde (40) took second and Matthew Vasquez (60) third.


Imperial's Gilbert Vallarta was second at 140 pounds in the novice class.

In the schoolboy division Imperial's Aaron Castillo (160) was second and Holtville's Cameron Drye (105) third and James Bentley (130) second.

Holtville's Elyse Verhofstadt took third at 121 in the cadet division while Imperial's Andrew Rimmele was second at 112.

IVDA swimming

EL CAJON — Seven Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmers competed in a meet at Montgomery Middle School here recently.

IVDA's Kacie Rodvil won the girls 9-10-year old 50-yard butterfly (39.36 seconds) and 100 freestyle (1 minute 21.69 seconds). Rodvil was second in the 100 individual medley and sixth in the 50 freestyle.

IVDA's Katrina Gomez won the girls 13-and-over 100 breaststroke (1:31.33), took seventh in the 50 freestyle and 200 I.M and was 10th in the 100 butterfly.

In the 11-12 girls class IVDA's Julianna Caro was third in the 100 I.M., fifth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 50 backstroke.

In the 11-12 boys class IVDA's Chase Oliver was third in the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly. Raul Caro was second in the 100 freestyle, third in the 100 I.M., fifth in the 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle and seventh in the 50 butterfly.

In the 9-10 boys division IVDA's Dominic Gomez took ninth in the 100 freestyle, 100 I.M. and 50 butterfly.

In the 8-and-under girls class IVDA's Mercedes Gonzales was 16th in the 100 freestyle and 19th in the 25 freestyle.

Girls — Katherine West (11) and Christine Gotchie (13).

Cruiser — Brian Cannon (17-20) and Bennie Derrick (41-45).

Novice — Tyler Herrera (9).

Intermediate — Austin Painter (5 and under), Anthony Nuñez (7), Tanner Holt (9), Tyler Spence (10), Nathan Binkinz (12) and Keith Johnson (16).

Expert — Jake Perritt (6), Chad Kerley (7), Ben Sauceda (9), Cameron Lofgren (11), Royce Culp (12), Ian Malcolm (14), Jason Hatcher (17) and Arturo Morales (19-27).
