Two people suffered major injuries Thursday when their vehicles collided on Highway 86 in the southeast portion of El Centro.

The collision occurred about 6:15 p.m. as a car driven by Donald C. Payne, 19, of El Paso, Texas made a U-turn into the path of a car driven by Kathy Rivera, 24, of Calexico.

Payne had been traveling south on the highway near Horne Road when he decided he wanted to turn around and head toward Interstate 8, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He then drove directly in front of Rivera, who applied her car's brakes and steered to the left but was unable to avoid the collision.

Both Payne and Rivera were taken by ambulance to El Centro Regional Medical Center. Information on their conditions was unavailable this morning.

Both were wearing seat belts.

In another collision minutes earlier, a car collided with a tractor-trailer rig on Forrester Road near Aten Road.

The Highway Patrol reported that a car driven by Martin Bendit, 46, of Imperial was heading west on Aten nearing the stop sign at Forrester.

The rig, driven by Pak Kyong Chun, 43, of Los Angeles, was traveling north on Forrester approaching Aten.

According to the Highway Patrol, Bendit pulled into the path of the truck. The vehicles collided, leaving Bendit and a 15-year-old passenger in his car with minor injuries.

They were taken by ambulance to El Centro Regional.

Chun was not injured.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt.

Both accidents remained under investigation this morning.
