A total of 1,628 people were served a hot Thanksgiving dinner Oct. 22 at The Salvation Army building in El Centro.
This community event was made possible by the sponsorship of KXO 1230 AM and the Imperial Valley Press. Ninety-eight volunteers who gave 513 volunteers hours supported this celebration by cooking, serving, washing, cleaning and sharing happiness to the families and individuals who came to this traditional Imperial Valley gathering.
Volunteers arrived early in the morning and with a smile begun to set up tables, chairs, decorating the tables, cutting the pies, preparing the coffee and punch and giving the last-minute preparations to the delicious turkey dinner. By 11 a.m. everyone was ready to start serving and the line of people was beginning to form around the building.
Laughter and happiness was all around. Volunteers both young and old took the plates and served them to families in need and to destitute individuals. This year the mood expressed how thankful they were to be able to receive a hot Thanksgiving dinner with a delicious piece of pie.
