Soccer: A good day for Southwest soccer

The Southwest High girls soccer team kicked off play in its own tournament in El Centro on Thursday with an 8-0 hammering of Holtville.

Leading Southwest were Rosa Saldaña and Cassy Aguilar with two goals each.

Holtville will play Indio at 3:15 today and Southwest will play Indio at 5:30. Both games will be at Southwest High in El Centro.

In other tournament action, Central Union High shut out Palo Verde 2-0.

Scoring for Central were Ana Nava and Rosa Majia. Vanessa Long picked up both assists.

Central will play La Quinta at 5:30 today at Sunflower Elementry in El Centro.

Boys soccer

Southwest 3, La Jolla 2

LA JOLLA — The Southwest High boys soccer team completed a perfect 5-0 run at the La Jolla Country Day tournament here Thursday by beating the host team 3-2 to win the title.

Leading Southwest in the championship was Joshua Mora, who scored the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute and picked up an assist.

Alfredo Garcia and Armando Burke both scored goals for the Eagles and Luis Montes chipped in two assists.

Mora earned tournament MVP honors. Juan Garcia, Jorge Renteria and Montes were named to the all-tournament team.

Said Southwest coach Rafael Contreras: "I was very happy with my team. They played three straight days and played real hard. Going into the tournament I thought we'd do pretty good, but I was thinking we'd make the finals."

The Eagles (5-1-2) will play at Kofa High in Yuma at 5 p.m. Monday.

Central 3, La Quinta 2

The Central Union High boys soccer team won its home opener 3-2 over La Quinta in El Centro on Thursday.

Tied 2-2 with 12 minutes remaining in the game, Luis Jimenez scored the go-ahead goal for Central.

Francisco Espinoza and Raul Cazares both scored goals for the Spartans.

Central (2-3-1) will host Cibola at 5 today.

Yuma 2, Brawley 1

YUMA — The Brawley Union High boys soccer team lost its second game of the year, falling 2-1 to Yuma High here Thursday.

Scoring for Brawley (1-2-1) was Alfredo Campas.

The Wildcats will host El Camino High at 7 tonight.
