‘Fast-track' moves to larger space, hours extended

December 10, 2001|STAFF REPORT

In the wake of moving to larger quarters in space dedicated to it alone, the "fast-track" emergency room at El Centro Regional Medical Center also has had its hours extended.

Virgie Galindo, assistant administrator and chief nursing officer, said the fast-track facility now is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 am. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Fast-track remains in the south hall of the hospital, but now occupies space formerly assigned to the outpatient rehabilitation services (physical therapy) department. Rehabilitation has been moved to newly refurbished facilities in an ancillary building on the hospital campus.

Fast-track formerly used a room in the endoscopy department facility during hours when endoscopy was closed. The move increases the number of gurneys available to fast track from three to six, as well as recliner chairs for patients.

The fast-track emergency room was devised in 1999 to reduce the waiting period for patients coming to emergency with relatively minor ailments. A triage nurse determines when a patient enters the emergency department whether the problem meets the criteria for emergency treatment or is less serious and non life-threatening. The fast- track emergency room is staffed by qualified emergency physicians and certified emergency nurses, Galindo said.
