CALIPATRIA — Police here collaborated with U.S. Border Patrol agents this morning to apprehend 16 suspected illegal immigrants and the driver of the vehicle in which they were traveling.

Calipatria Police Chief Reggie Gomez said a U.S. Border Patrol air unit was observing a white sport-utility vehicle heading toward Calipatria on Highway 115 about 8:45 this morning.

Border Patrol agents contacted the Calipatria Police Department for assistance.

Gomez said an officer saw the vehicle coming into the city and tried to stop it.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jose Emmanuel Adame, 23, of Igula, Guerrero, Mexico, failed to yield and led police officer on a three-block chase.

The driver stopped near Railroad Avenue and Delta Street, where he attempted to jump into the back of the vehicle with the passengers.

However, Gomez said the police officer was able to approach the vehicle soon enough to identify the driver.

Adame was being held in the county jail today for possession of stolen property, felony reckless evading and possession of burglary equipment. The 16 suspected illegal immigrants were turned over to Border Patrol.

The vehicle reportedly was stolen from San Diego and will be returned to its owner.
