6 seek Calexico City Council seats

December 10, 2001|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — Six prospective candidates for two available Calexico City Council seats have taken out paperwork for the March election.

The six are incumbent City Councilman Javier Alatorre, along with James Beaver, David De Leon, David Ouzan, Alex Perrone and Carlos Rocha.

Perrone and Rocha have turned in their papers and 20 signatures, according to City Clerk Lourdes Cordova.

She will release the final list of candidates next week after all candidates have turned in their papers and signatures and those signatures have been validated.

She said there could be more potential candidates taking out papers and turning in signatures and finished paperwork before the end of the week.

The filing deadline for the March election is Friday. The deadline was extended a week since City Councilman Gilbert Grijalva is not defending his seat.

Grijalva is running for the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors.

In addition to the two seats up for grabs in March, an additional seat on the council could open depending on the results of the county supervisorial election.

Mayor Victor Carrillo is running for election to the Board of Supervisors against District 1 Supervisor Tony Tirado.

If Carrillo is elected to the county board, "It's up to the council to decide if they want to appoint someone to fill the expired term or schedule a special election," Cordova said.
