December 11, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — Calexico High School was damaged when a woman, reportedly driving under the influence, crashed her car through a fence leading into the school, narrowly missing the school administration building.

Arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was Brenda Ramirez Camarena, 22, of Calexico, who was booked into the county jail and later released on her own recognizance.

Calexico police Sgt. Jim Neujahr alleged that at 2 a.m. Sunday, Camarena was driving a car through an alley in the 1000 block of Ethel Street. He also alleged she was "highly intoxicated," but he did not have her specific blood to alcohol ratio.

Neujahr said Camarena reportedly passed out while driving through the alley, allowing her car to strike a parked car and a shaded parking structure.

Her car then went into the high school parking lot, crashed through a chain-link fence leading into the high school, struck a wrought iron fence in the school and came within four feet of hitting the administration building.

The car came to a stop on the football field.

When police arrived they found Camarena uninjured. She was taken into custody.
