Calipatria police will be filing a complaint with the District Attorney's Office against a 23-year-old Mexicali man suspected of smuggling 16 illegal immigrants.

Calipatria Police Chief Reggie Gomez said his department will ask the DA's office to press charges against Jose Emmanvel Adame for possession of stolen property, felony failure to yield and assault with a deadly weapon.

Adame was arrested by Calipatria police Monday morning near Railroad Avenue and Delta Street after being pursued by police for about three blocks.

U.S. Border Patrol had been pursuing Adame, who allegedly was driving a sport-utility vehicle with 16 illegal immigrants inside.

The chase started somewhere near Interstate 8. Border Patrol officials are alleging Adame tried to run over an agent while avoiding a tire-deflation device while heading east on Interstate 8 near Highway 98, Gomez said.

When Adame stopped the vehicle in Calipatria he attempted to jump into the back with the immigrants but police arrived in time to identify him, Gomez said.

Police later found out the vehicle was stolen from a resident in San Diego.

The immigrants were turned over to the Border Patrol. The vehicle will be picked up by the owner today.
