>>50 years ago — An additional $327,332 is needed to complete construction and purchase equipment needed for the Imperial Valley Memorial Hospital in El Centro, board Chairman Earl E. Nielsen said Tuesday in announcing the supplementary money-raising campaign will start Friday. An exhaustive drive was conducted in spring 1950 in which about $442,000 was raised. A supplementary drive in May this year by the volunteer workers brought the total amount pledged to nearly $442,000.

>>40 years ago — Imperial Irrigation District officials, acting at the request of the U.S. Department of State, met Monday morning with Mexican officials in Mexicali and drew up proposals to furnish IID water from the All-American Canal and bring an end to Mexicali's critical water salinity problem.

>>30 years ago — The Brawley Union High School fine arts department is combining the talents of art, band and chorus students and instructors to present the annual Christmas program Dec. 16 in Palmer Auditorium. The program begins at 8 p.m. but entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. for all interested.

>>20 years ago — Four Vietnamese resident aliens linked to a massive San Diego-based fishing operation that netted thousands of dollars from sales of illegal catches have been fined $700 each for conviction of unlawful netting of corvina at the Salton Sea. Fish and Game Warden Joe Brana said the arrests came after four vehicles were stopped in San Diego and Imperil counties during an investigation into illegal fishing at the Salton Sea under the cover of darkness.
