Jazz at Lincoln Center judge to conduct clinic for Valley students

The Central Union High School band has invited noted clinician and educator Ron Carter to work with music students from throughout the Imperial Valley this week.

Carter, an associate professor of music at Northern Illinois University and a judge for the Essentially Ellington contest through Jazz at Lincoln Center, will host clinics and perform with Jimmie Cannon's Valley Jazz on Thursday through Saturday.

The free Valley Jazz concert, featuring Carter, will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the Southwest Performing Arts Theatre.

Clinics Friday and Saturday will include jazz rehearsal techniques, improvisation and a woodwind clinic focusing on saxophones and clarinets. All music students are encouraged to attend.

Carter's schedule is as follows:

· 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Valley Jazz rehearsal at Central Union High School

· 9:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, clarinet and saxophone clinic for all Imperial Valley band students at Southwest theater

· 1:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, open rehearsal with Central jazz; Big Band rehearsal techniques at Southwest


· 7 p.m. Friday, Valley Jazz concert at Southwest theater with reception immediately following in the Southwest band room

· 10 a.m-noon Saturday, improvisation clinic for all Imperial Valley band students with lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

· 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Central jazz rehearsal at the CUHS band room.
