Firefighters from the Imperial County and El Centro fire departments battled a blaze Tuesday that destroyed a home on Evan Hewes Highway west of El Centro.

The fire erupted sometime before 6 a.m. and firefighters were called to the scene, near the intersection of Evan Hewes and Austin Road, at 6:04.

Imperial County Senior Firefighter Luis Andrade said about 20 firefighters from the two departments responded and extinguished the fire within 30 minutes.

Andrade said when firefighters arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames and could not be saved. He said fire crews did prevent flames from destroying an office building just a few feet from the residence.

No one was in the home when the fire erupted and there were no injuries caused by the blaze.

However, a woman who lived at the house, Billy Jean Brown, was left without a home, according to American Red Cross staffers who responded to the scene.

Brown lived alone in the home. Red Cross staffers said she will stay with relatives in the Valley.

Andrade said this morning the blaze remained under investigation, adding crews were at the scene this morning trying to determine what caused the fire.

Andrade added there was no information on where the fire may have originated.
