HOLTVILLE — Marv Wood was unanimously named president of the Holtville Unified School District Board of Trustees on Thursday night.

Trustee Paula Daniels was named clerk of the board by a vote of 3-2 with Cliff Strahm and George Morris casting the dissenting votes.

Also Thursday, newly elected board member Joan Thornburg along with newly re-elected incumbents Morris and Daniels were sworn in.

A retired teacher and coach at Holtville High School, Wood, 62, was named to the school board in 1999.

"I am excited about it because of the people I will be working with," Wood said.

"I have long said that it all begins with quality management, with qualified and dedicated staff and a comprehensive, districtwide educational plan. I think we have those folks in place. I know that along with (Superintendent) Pat Maruca, and others to be named, we will soon begin working on a strategic plan.

"I am hoping with this team in place we can provide an environment in which the staff, students, parents and community can take pride in its school system and achieve our collective vision," Wood said.

"It has been my perception that for the longest time our district was one of the jewels of the school systems in the county. I hope that we can again lay claim to that status."
