Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley for Charles Jordan "C.J." Smith, 84, of Brawley, who died Saturday in his home in rural Brawley.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.

Mr. Smith was born May 8, 1917, in Greenville, Texas. He came to the Imperial Valley with his family when he was 3 months old.

Mr. Smith married Hazelle Bearden in Champagne-Urbana, Ill., on Jan. 13, 1941.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as an instructor for aircraft mechanics.

After the war, Mr. Smith returned to the family farm and had continued farming in the Magnolia area of Brawley since that time.


He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Brawley and served on the Magnolia Union Elementary school board for many years.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jim Smith; sister, Ann Sassie; and brother, Bill R. Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Hazelle Smith of Brawley; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Marilyn Smith and Ken and Shannon Smith, all of Brawley; daughter-in-law, Betty Jean Smith of Brawley; sister, Marjorie Roberts of Brawley; brother, James R. Smith of Brawley; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church, 133 K St., Brawley, CA 92227.
