Three people suffered major injuries in a two-vehicle collision west of El Centro on Sunday and authorities are investigating whether alcohol played a role in the accident.

The collision occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on Forrester Road north of Hackleman Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Refugio Meza Alba, 43, of Winterhaven was driving a minivan from Indio to Yuma.

He was traveling south on Forrester at speeds of up to 55 mph as Blanca Guzman, 23, of Moreno Valley was driving from El Centro to Moreno Valley and heading north on Forrester.

The Highway Patrol stated in a press release that Alba attempted to pass a slow-moving car by moving into the northbound lane and drove into the path of Guzman's car. The vehicles collided head-on.

Guzman suffered major injuries, as did one of two sisters she had in her vehicle, Jennifer Guzman, 18. Her other sister, Aolani Guzman, 21, suffered moderate injuries. All the sisters reside in Moreno Valley.

Alba also suffered major injuries. There were no passengers in his vehicle.

All the victims were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center. All were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

According to the Highway Patrol, Alba is being investigated for allegedly driving under the influence. Information also was unavailable this morning on the conditions of the victims.
