December 17, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

The search was on today for a county jail inmate who fled from Pioneers Memorial Hospital on Saturday, according to the county Sheriff's Office.

The man, Carlos Arreguin, 52, of El Centro was serving time for driving under the influence and a weapons offense convictions.

Sheriff's Lt. Bill Willard said Arreguin was taken to Pioneers for treatment but he did not specify Arreguin's medical problem.

At some point before 10:35 a.m., Arreguin left the hospital.

Willard said because Arreguin was serving time for misdemeanors, he was not under watch by guards. However, officials did tell him if he left the hospital he would be charged with escape.

As of this morning, Arreguin remained at large and officials were continuing their search. Officers were going to check his house and attempt to re-arrest him, Willard said.
