Holtville and Calexico FFA compete in Hemet

FFA chapters from Holtville and Calexico participated Dec. 8 at the Hemet FFA Field Day.

Led by adviser Deanna Elmer, Holtville FFA participated in best-informed greenhand and livestock contests.

Led by adviser Johnny Esquer, Calexico FFA competed in best-informed greenhand, vegetables, livestock and ornamental horticulture judging contests.

The Calexico greenhand team of Anita Claverie, Jesus Espinoza and Jorge Wong picked up first through third places, respectively, and won the Hemet greenhand contest. The Holtville FFA greenhand team of Michael Mora (fourth as individual), Allen Nelson (sixth), Emilio Rios (eighth), Aubrey Alexander (10th), Eric Cueto and Antonio Martinez placed second.

Calexico's vegetable judging team of Karla Wong (third), Esmeralda Aguilera (fifth) and Anita Claverie (eighth) placed second. Calexico's ornamental horticulture team of Sergio Almada, Ivan Vargas and Philip Cheng placed fifth.

Holtville FFA placed fifth and Calexico placed sixth in the livestock contest. Holtville's team was Michael Mora, Allen Nelson, Emilio Rios, Aubrey Alexander, Eric Cueto and Antonio Martinez. Calexico's team was Eduardo Mercado, Mario Higareda and Marco A. Rodriguez.

FFA contests allow agriculture students to apply their knowledge in judging agricultural commodities. Teams may continue to practice before school, at lunch or after school in gaining further skills in competing at the regional and state levels.

The FFA members will continue their efforts in working toward placing at the Norte Vista Field Day on Jan. 12.
