The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors unanimously elected Division 4 Director Stella Mendoza to be its next president.

Mendoza's term will run for the calendar year 2002.

"It's an exciting time to be president of the board," she said. "I look forward to the challenges and responsibilities that come with it."

Mendoza's election makes her the first woman to be president, as well as the first woman to be a director.

When asked in what direction she would like to take the district, Mendoza said she is but one vote out of five.

"I look forward to working with my fellow board members and running efficient meetings," she said.

Mendoza has long commented that board meetings last too long, and after her election, she was teased for constantly urging the board to vote on the issue at hand.

Mendoza said the board's strengths are that the directors work well together as a team to make good decisions for the community despite different viewpoints and experiences.

"We agree to disagree," she said.

Mendoza was then asked to comment on the board's weaknesses.

"I haven't found any weaknesses on this board," she said.

Outgoing President Andy Horne thanked the board and district staff for all of their help during his year as board president.

The board also unanimously elected Division 3 Director Lloyd Allen as vice president, district treasurer, Jane Alsip, to continue as treasurer and Gloria Rivera as board secretary.
