CALEXICO — The beautification committee here is asking this city's holiday decorators to call the Chamber of Commerce and register for the annual Christmas decoration contest.

To register call 357-1166 before 5 p.m. Thursday.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, beautification committee members will pile into a car and drive around Calexico to judge the decorated houses of those who enter the contest.

Participants will be judged in three categories: religion, lighting and uniqueness.

Winners will receive plaques or certificates.

For first-place finishers, "We're giving out a microwave and a coffee pot," said city Recreation Director Javier Gonzalez.

He said the items are not appliances left over from his last move.

"Oh no, they're new," he said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, four people had entered the contest. Last year, 15 people entered.

Gonzalez hopes people call the chamber as soon as possible to sign up so a good percentage of the community will be involved.

He was asked if a participant in the contest has ever set up a manger scene featuring a real baby dressed as the baby Jesus.

Gonzalez said no one has ever used a real baby before in a nativity scene.

Gonzalez was asked why cash prizes aren't being given out.

He said the committee gives out certificates that have been "signed by the mayor" to all participants and plaques to the winners.

Hildy Carrillo-Rivera, the chamber's executive director, said, "The winners receive trophies and then those people can display those trophies in their holiday decor next year."
