SAN DIEGO — A suspected gang-related shooting has turned into a murder investigation as a 16-year-old boy shot in the head at a party in Brawley in September died in a San Diego hospital.

Jesse A. Garcia III, a Brawley Union High School sophomore, died Tuesday from a gunshot wound. Police confirmed Garcia's death is related to the shooting in September.

"We don't know too much right now," said Sal Rodriguez, an investigator with the San Diego County Coroner's Office. He said San Diego authorities are working with the Brawley Police Department on the case.

Jesse, whose name was not released after the shooting, was at a party in the early-morning hours of Sept. 16 in the 1000 block of B Street.

While Jesse was not thought to be part of a gang, there were members of a Brawley gang at the party. According to police, about six members of a rival gang arrived at the party on foot and at least one person drew a handgun and opened fire.

Jesse was struck in the head and another youth was grazed on the side. That other teen was treated at the scene and not taken to a hospital.

Jesse was transported to a San Diego hospital, where he was put on life support.
