Basketball: Brawley falls to Mira Mesa

SAN DIEGO — Despite an 18-point effort from Carlos Corral, the Brawley Union High boys basketball team lost 68-54 to Mira Mesa in Kiwanis tournament action here Thursday.

Mark Rivera scored 15 points and Lafayette Lofton turned in 13 points for the Wildcats.

Brawley will play Crawford at 4:45 today in tournament action.

Rancho Bernardo 79, Central 63

SAN DIEGO — The Central Union High boys basketball team dropped its seventh straight game of the year in a 79-63 loss to Rancho Bernardo in Kiwanis tournament action here Thursday.

Vincent McSee scored 20 points to lead Central, followed by Anthony Sabal's 14.

The Spartans will play at Serra High School at 6:30 tonight.

Mission Bay 49, Calexico 32

SAN DIEGO — The Calexico High School boys basketball team lost 49-32 to Mission Bay in the San Diego Kiwanis tournament here Thursday.


Adrian Maldonado and Alex Marin paced the Bulldogs (2-3) with eight points each.

Calexico returns to action in the tournament at 6:30 tonight against Valley Center at Hoover High.

Girls basketball

Calexico 43, Hoover 15

SAN DIEGO — Coming off a loss in the Kiwanis tournament here Wednesday, the Calexico High girls basketball team got back on the winning track with a 43-15 thumping of Hoover High on Thursday.

Leading Calexico were Lizeth Lopez with 12 points and Kimberly Carrillo with nine.

The Bulldogs will be back in tournament action today.

Rancho Bernardo 62, Brawley 36

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High girls basketball team dropped its third game of the season in a 62-36 loss to Rancho Bernardo in the Kiwanis tournament here Thursday.

Leading Brawley was Kaylin Rubin with 12 points.

The Wildcats (6-3 overall) will continue tournament play at 4:45 today as they play at Mission Bay High School.
