BRAWLEY — A 38-year-old Brawley woman could be facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly hitting her brother with a shovel several times during an argument Christmas Day.

County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pompeyo Tabarez said the department will be filing a complaint with the District Attorney's Office no later than Thursday against Mary Lou Sandoval Cornejo.

Tabarez said authorities received a call about 3 p.m. regarding a disturbance in the 500 block of West Cody Road.

Deputies were told by Cornejo's family members that she had just struck her brother with a shovel several times. The brother's name was not available but he is thought to be in his late 30s, Tabarez said.

Tabarez said investigators are not sure why Cornejo struck her brother but think it came after an argument.

Cornejo lived in a trailer next to her brother, who also lived in a trailer. Information on the brother's condition was unavailable.

Cornejo was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. She was being held in the county jail today with bail set at $20,000.
