CALEXICO — A Calexico man was killed and three others were sent to the hospital after a traffic collision northeast of here Christmas Day.

Gustavo Alonso Gonzalez Jr., 25, died in the 5:30 p.m. crash on Highway 98 west of Cole Road. Though Gonzalez was listed as a Calexico resident on a California Highway Patrol press release, it is thought he also had a Mexicali address, a CHP officer said.

Gonzalez was driving a sedan east on Highway 98 behind the vehicle of 26-year-old David Salazar Humberto of Mexicali, according to the press release. As Salazar's vehicle slowed to make a left turn, Gonzalez's car collided with the turning vehicle's rear end, causing Salazar's vehicle to spin and come to rest on the highway's right shoulder.

Gonzalez's sedan went sideways into the highway's westbound lane directly in front of a vehicle driven by Silvestre Carrizoza Lopez, 45, of King City. Gonzalez's car was broadsided on its left side and sent onto the shoulder of the roadway, according to the press release.

The three passengers in Lopez's vehicle were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment. Liz Lopez, 17, sustained major injuries and Maria Louisa Lopez, 45, and Gabriela Lopez, 20, sustained moderate injuries. All three are from King City.

A reporter's phone call to El Centro Regional inquiring about the condition of the three Lopez women was not returned Wednesday morning.
