Our Opinion: A special Christmas

December 26, 2001

This Christmas is much different from any in recent memory.

Our country is in a war with pure evil, one that is trying to wipe us and our way of life off the planet. The forces of evil sucker-punched our nation a few months ago, but we bounced back quickly and are chasing down the sneak attackers even on this Christmas morning.

Yes, we were in a war a decade ago, but that war was against an enemy we could clearly identify and that was in one place. This enemy runs and hides from our power, then attacks us when and where we least expect. Or so it thinks. Unlike any enemy in the past, it attacks the innocent, the citizenry. It is an enemy with no boundaries and no conscience.

Still, despite this battle, despite our tremendous losses, despite the terror we the American people must face, we are on our feet and recovering well. We are going on with our daily lives even as we support the mission of our soldiers and allies overseas.

Our economy was on a slide even before the Sept. 11 attacks on our nation, and has continued sliding since, but this Christmas season has been better than the experts predicted. It has been quite good in the Imperial Valley, as our area continues to grow and transition into a more prosperous place.

But this year is less about gifts received and given and more about the people we care about. Many of our countrymen lost loved ones to the terrorists, so we need to look across the room Christmas morning and be happy — no, overjoyed — that we are with our loved ones on this special morning.

Today we celebrate the birth of Christ, the Prince of Peace. Christianity is about peace. Others in this time may say Christianity is about something different, but they are wrong. No religion, in fact, is about hate. No religion advocates killing the innocent. Islam certainly does not, despite what some demons might say.

So this Christmas may not be our most peaceful, but it may be our most deeply felt. We can be happy today we are with our loved ones, happy today that the forces of evil are being defeated, happy today that peace on Earth may soon return.
