Bad Boys on New Year's

December 27, 2001|By MARIO RENTERIA, Staff Writer

Spend this New Year's Eve with the Texas "bad boys," Conjunto Complejo.

The two-member Conjunto Complejo, which was founded Jan. 1, 1997 in Pasadena, Texas, by vocalist Richard Veliz and accordionist Julian Gonzalez, will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight Monday in the American Citizens Club, 890 B St. in Brawley.

Complejo recently released its debut CD on Joey Records, "Chulita." A mix of cumbias and rancheras, the disc is receiving extensive air-time in Texas and has been catching on in California as well.

Locally, Complejo is getting airplay on KUBO 88.7 FM.

Complejo also has won Houston's annual Battle of the Bands competition two years in a row.

The two Texas "bad boys" have performed with big artists like Mazz, Jaime y Los Chamacos and Emilio and the Hometown Boys. They have performed all over Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana and in Mexico.

Complejo also has performed throughout California, taking the Tejano group through Los Angeles and Fresno.

After its performance in Brawley, the band will head to Chicago.

The performance is part of a New Year's Eve dance being put on by the Brawley ACC. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and can be purchased by calling Brawley Trailer Supply at 344-6620, Alvino Alarcon at 351-2408 or Toni and Dora at 344-4500.

Doors to the ACC event open at 7 p.m.
