Basketball: Southwest rips Midway 76-38

SAN DIEGO — The Southwest High School boys basketball team ripped Midway Baptist 76-38 to open play in the Montgomery Tournament here Wednesday.

Nate LaBoy scored 29 points to pace the Eagles (3-7). Brian Martinez added 16 and Chris Lara scored 15 for Southwest.

The Eagles return to action in the tournament at 10:45 this morning against Grossmont.

Calexico 68, Pacific Hills 51

EL CAJON — Adrian Maldonado scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Calexico High to a 68-51 win over Pacific Hills in the Granite Hills tournament here Wednesday.

Alex Marin added 23 points for the Bulldogs (3-3).

Calexico will be back in action at the tournament at 2 today against Valhalla.

West Hills 64, Brawley 59

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High School boys basketball team fell to West Hills of Santee 64-59 in the Montgomery tournament here Wednesday.

Lafayette Lofton led the Wildcats (4-4) with 28 points. Mark Rivera added 18.

Brawley will be back in tournament action at 5 today against Montgomery.

El Cajon Valley 86, Central 72

EL CAJON — The Central Union High School boys basketball team lost its 10th game of the season, falling 86-72 to El Cajon Valley at the Granite Hills tournament here Wednesday.

Vincent McSee led the Spartans (0-10) with 15 points. Luis Robles scored 13 and Paul Porter added 12 for Central.

The Spartans return to action in the tournament today.

Calipatria 53, Borrego Springs 48

SAN DIEGO — The Calipatria High School boys basketball team captured the championship of the Tri-City Christian tournament with a 53-48 win over Borrego Springs here Saturday.

Ezequeil Navarro, who led the Hornets (6-4) with 18 points, was named the most valuable player for the tournament. Vontray Taylor, who made the all-tournament team, scored 14 in the title game.

Girls basketball

Calexico 45, Sweetwater 21

EL CAJON — Lizette Lopez scored 20 points to lead Calexico to a 45-21 win over Sweetwater in the Granite Hills tournament here Wednesday.

Lupe Escobar added seven points for the Bulldogs (6-5), who will be back in action in the tournament today.

Montgomery 45, Brawley 39

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High School girls basketball team fell to host Montgomery 45-39 in the Montgomery tournament here Wednesday.

Reggie Horta led the Wildcats (6-5) with 12 points.

Brawley will be back in action at the tournament at 2 today against South Mountain High of Phoenix.
